Let’s make wrinkles disappear
I love medical aesthetics and how it has advanced so much in the last 10 years. As a woman and a doctor, I feel I now have the ability to give my patients (and of course myself) the opportunity to look younger and healthier no matter what age we are, which gives us a daily boost of confidence when we look in the mirror.
I have been asked multiple times… “What is Botox?”, “How does it really work”, “Will Botox fill my wrinkle lines?”, “Do you get Botox?”. Let me give you a little bit of background information first and then answer some of these questions.
Neuromodulators are prescription drugs prepared by purifying botulinum toxin A, which is a bacterial toxin that blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles where the product is injected reducing the way the muscles contract. When the muscles can’t contract, the skin can’t form any wrinkles… Yayyy!!! This is the science behind treating unwanted lines in the crow’s feet area or the commonly known “elevens” which are the frown lines between the eyebrows.
There are three brands of neuromodulators… BOTOX®, Xeomin® and Dysport. To put it in simple terms, this is like comparing 3 different brands of laundry detergents. In theory, they all work the same way but have minimal differences. On this post I will only be talking about Botox and Xeomin since I don’t use Dysport in my office.
Allergan makes the BOTOX® brand and Merz Aesthetics makes Xeomin®. They are both injected into the muscles and their effect lasts around 3-4 months. The duration of treatment varies based on how fast your body metabolizes the product. For example, people that exercise 4-5 times a week tend to need touch ups every 3 months instead of the full 4 months, but it is patient dependent. After you are injected, you can start seeing results and the wrinkles disappear in around 5-7 days but it could take up to 2 weeks.
Lines that you see when you smile, frown or move any of the muscles in your face are treated with neuromodulators. Any line that you see when your face is at rest has to be treated with dermal fillers because they are too deep and not related to muscle contraction.
Side effects of the drug are mostly due to where the product is injected. If it is injected in the wrong muscle, it could result in sagging of the eyebrow (brow ptosis) or an uneven smile.
Another important fact about neuromodulators is that they can be used preventively. You don’t have to wait for wrinkles to appear in order to start using these products. By using them preventively, the muscles will move less frequently which delays the development of wrinkles in the future… that is the key!
My experience with neuromodulators has been amazing. My patients are very happy with their results and always want to come back for more. I have tried both Botox and Xeomin and, in my opinion, they both work great and last around the same time. I have been getting these products preventively for 3 years and I am very happy with the results.
To get the best outcome, it is always recommended to go to an experienced physician who is well trained in injecting BOTOX® / Xeomin®. Many medical aesthetic offices offer free consultations, so take advantage of this and see how these fascinating products can help you prevent or fight unwanted wrinkles to stay beautifully healthy.
