Treating fine lines and wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles… these are very common topics that come up when we start aging. Aging has nothing to do with physical age. There are so many components that influence how and when we start getting fine lines and wrinkles. These include genetics, skin type, our daily skincare regimen, sun exposure, our line of work and of course our age. We tend to ask our friends as soon as we start noticing that first line in our forehead or between the eyebrows… “I have this line!!! Do I need Botox or Fillers?”
Botox is a Neuromodulator which relaxes the muscles and helps get rid of wrinkles that appear when the muscles contract. Dermal fillers are products used under the skin to fill facial wrinkles creating a smoother appearance of the skin.
Most of the fillers in the market are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is a molecule present in the skin and joints which helps maintain adequate amounts of moisture. It helps keep the skin smooth, firm and healthy. It also helps the joints with movements by maintaining lubrication in between the bones, thus preventing arthritis related pain. Belotero is a hyaluronic acid filler which helps correct and smooth fine facial lines. It has a cohesive gel appearance making it very thin and moldable.
This dermal filler blends very well to the skin making it feel very natural to the touch and giving the patient a natural look. Belotero is typically used for fine lines above the lips (“smoking lines”), corners of the mouth, smile lines, and chin wrinkles. Other uses are the vermilion border of the lips, the “elevens” in the frown area, forehead lines and the tear troughs. What makes this product unique, is that it is so thin and blends so well that you don’t get that blue discoloration that you can get with other fillers if they are injected too superficially (this side effect is called the Tyndall Effect). Also, it is not hydrophilic so it does not retain too much water after it is injected which causes less swelling in the area.
Radiesse is a filler composed of Calcium Hydroxylapatite which not only instantly replenishes volume but also stimulates the production of your own natural collagen. This filler is very different to Belotero in that it has a thicker concentration and has more elasticity, making it great to add volume. Radiesse is used to give volume to the cheeks and correct deeper wrinkles in the nasolabial folds and hands. Both products are from the company Merz.
These dermal fillers tend to last around one year depending on where it is injected and of course your skincare regimen. A good skincare regimen helps the skin maintain it’s moisture and can help the dermal fillers last a little longer. Ultimately, the longevity depends on how fast you metabolize the product. The results are immediate and there is little to no downtime. You can find many before and after pictures of both products here under the injectables tab.
